The Volvo CE LX2 concept compact wheel loader and EX2 concept compact excavator received a 2018 Innovative Iron Award from Compact Equipment magazine, as announced in their November-December 2018 issue.
Volvo CE highlighted the EX2 fully-electric compact excavator prototype at Intermat, a French construction trade fair, in April. At the Volvo Group Innovation Summit in September, the company announced the LX2 electric compact wheel loader concept vehicle.
These units offer zero emissions, higher efficiency, lower noise levels, and reduced ownership costs. Both replaced the combustion engine with lithium ion batteries, which store enough electric energy to operate each unit for eight hours in intense applications like digging. These prototypes are not yet available to the public, but their technology will hopefully help spearhead the commercial realities of electric units in the near future.
The Innovative Iron Awards recognize companies with products, including machines, engines, OEM technology, and apps, that have set new standards for power, versatility, efficiency, and design in the heavy construction equipment industry.
"Our editors traveled across the country to meet these manufacturers, operate their new products, and give detailed reports both in print and online," said Compact Equipment Editor Keith Gribbons. "With [the Innovative Iron Awards], we do a final salute to those companies that have changed the equipment market over the last year with their unique, interesting, and innovative products."
