Highway Remembers - 70 Years of Innovation

Updated: Feb 23, 2022

It was the year 1951. The Highway Equipment & Supply Co. you know and love incorporated and began establishing a growing presence in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania under the oversight of the Liptak and Flood families, who still, to this day, own & operate the company.

In a few short years business went from selling small equipment like water pumps and air tools, to being able to offer the addition of a parts & service department and on-the-road salesmen. Continued growth and industry changes soon meant representing more manufacturers. Highway became a Michigan wheel loader dealer and then, later, added Gradall Company and Euclid to its list of manufacturers.

Industry demand brought about the need for expansion and in 1960 Highway established a branch in Drums, PA. Henry M. Liptak was at the helm in Harrisburg as the President and Bill Flood served as the company Treasurer/Secretary overseeing the Drums location.

Over time Clark Michigan would become part of the VME Group. This would be the first experience for Highway, in dealing with a foreign company and proved that the evolution of business with Volvo would be for the better.

Progress continued, adding articulated haul trucks and excavators to the company product offerings. By the early 2000's the addition of a branch in Lock Haven and in Brownstown were opened to cover North Central PA and the Lancaster, Lebanon & York areas, respectively. Later, Highway would also add Volvo CE's paving and compaction lines at all 4 of its locations expanding the markets served.

Over the course of 70 years many changes took place, but the most important things still remain the same. Highway continues to be a consistent, reliable resource to businesses to get the best help selecting & maintaining the RIGHT machines for their jobs. A team of friendly, knowledgeable, and educated professionals, who care about the customers, is always at the ready. Focus on keeping up with industry trends remains a priority so that our loyal customers can count on a solid, stress free experience when purchasing and servicing equipment. Highway recognizes that there is always competition around and it motivates the company to work harder and continue to cultivate a service oriented environment.

"Overall, we are a strong company. We've gone through ups and downs and survived them all, even coming out bigger and better." ~Michael Liptak, Current President
